Scripture Verses Set To Music
Alwyn Jack, who was pianist at the church for many years, has composed a collection of choruses by taking verses from scripture and setting them to music. In her own words, this is how it came about:
It is a well-known fact that putting words to music is a quick way of committing those words to memory. This has been proved again in our Sunday School at the Welcome Hall Evangelical Church.
We have a board outside our church where a text from scripture is displayed, a new one being put up every few weeks. We would try to get the Sunday School children to learn each of these texts. My brother, Paul Lewis, who was the Sunday School Superintendent, asked me one day if I would put music to the text on the board at the time. I did this, and the children found no problem with memorising the verse.
Subsequently, each new text had an accompanying tune written for it, and before long the children knew many bible texts from memory. Over a period of about 40 years, I have collected these, and written them down, and now we are making them available here.
I pray that the Lord will use these scripture choruses to be a blessing to many more children in other Sunday Schools far and near.
“Let everything that has breath praise the Lord”. Psalm 150v6.
